Biography

Dr Nuno Antunes is a partner at ‘Miranda & Associados’, the Miranda Alliance Portuguese law firm associated with ‘Fátima Freitas & Associados’ in Angola. He co-heads the ‘Energy and Natural Resources’ and ‘Public Law and Regulatory’ practices. Focusing primarily on upstream oil and gas across multiple jurisdictions, he has acted for petroleum companies and State entities alike, advising on international, constitutional, regulatory, contractual, environmental, tax, M&A, project structuring, and FDI legal matters. He advises also on energy, renewables and mining matters. A law of the sea specialist, he is a member of the list of arbitrators of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Before joining ‘Miranda & Associados’, Dr Antunes was adviser to the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste for the petroleum sector, having participated in the drafting of petroleum legislation (Petroleum Act, Petroleum Taxation Act, Petroleum Fund Law) and advised on maritime delimitation and petroleum resources negotiations in the Timor Sea. He was also legal coordinator of the Portuguese task force for extension of the continental shelf.

Graduated in Law by the University of Lisbon, Dr Antunes holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. from the University of Durham (U.K.). He has taught public international law and constitutional law, and currently lectures petroleum law and taxation in post-graduate courses at the Portuguese Catholic University (Lisbon). He is a member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators, International Bar Association, and International Law Association.
